Family Medicine Q&A

What is family medicine?

Family medicine addresses the physical, mental, and emotional health of the whole family.

Heart Healthy Family Practice provides comprehensive family medicine services for adults and adolescents aged 12 and up. The team can diagnose and treat a range of acute illnesses, chronic diseases, and minor injuries in-office.

The team also has experience providing geriatric care services tailored to the changing needs of older adults as they age.

Flexible scheduling is available for in-office visits, and the team can also meet with you virtually through the online telehealth platform.

What family medicine services are available?

Heart Healthy Family Practice provides holistic, patient-centered family medicine services, including:

  • Immunizations
  • Annual physicals
  • Sick visits
  • Preventive health screenings
  • Women’s wellness exams
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing
  • Weight loss and nutritional counseling

The team also offers chronic disease management services to address the challenges of living with a chronic health issue, such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, and allergies.

You can schedule a family medicine visit for your loved ones or yourself if you’re experiencing pain or other symptoms you can’t manage at home. You should also book an appointment once a year for routine wellness exams and preventive screenings, even if you feel well.

What can I expect during a family medicine visit?

If you schedule a sick visit, the Heart Healthy Family Practice team assesses your symptoms, completes a physical, and may order diagnostic testing. They customize a care plan to treat a wide range of acute health issues, including colds, flu, strep throat, and skin infections. Your family can also visit the office for minor injuries like muscle sprains and cuts.

If you’re visiting for a routine wellness exam, the medical team completes a physical exam. They may order blood work or other diagnostic tests to assess your overall health and identify early signs of disease.

Your routine wellness visit is also a great time to get updates for immunizations that protect against contagious diseases like measles, mumps, and influenza (flu).

During a women’s health exam, the providers complete a pelvic exam to check your reproductive organs. They also screen for cancer during a breast exam and Pap smear. If you’re sexually active, the providers can also test for STDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea.
